Kuripe – A Traditional Tool for Personal Rituals

The Kuripe is a ceremonial applicator traditionally used by indigenous Amazonian tribes for self-administration of Rapé (Hapé)—a sacred herbal snuff made from finely ground mapacho, ashes, medicinal herbs, or plants. This tool plays a significant role in spiritual, healing, and shamanic rituals, especially among the Yawanawá, Huni Kuin (Kaxinawá), and Katukina tribes in Brazil and Peru.

Traditional Use of Kuripe

The Kuripe is a self-blowing pipe that enables the application of Rapé without assistance from another person. It is typically made from bamboo, bone, or wood and is often decorated with engraved patterns, beads, feathers, or sacred symbols.

Ceremonial & Healing Significance

In indigenous cultures, Kuripe is used in rituals and personal practices for:
✔ Cleansing the mind and spirit – Rapé is traditionally considered a tool for removing negative thoughts, enhancing focus, and deepening meditation.
✔ Balancing energy and emotions – Using Kuripe helps to harmonize the body's energy field.
✔ Connecting with nature and the spiritual world – Kuripe allows for personal contemplation and deeper connection with nature and one's intuition.
✔ Supporting physical and emotional well-being – Indigenous traditions associate Rapé with releasing blockages and achieving inner clarity.

How Kuripe is Used in Indigenous Culture

1. Preparation of the Space

Before applying Rapé, it is important to set an intention and create a peaceful, ritualistic environment.

2. Application with Kuripe

  • small amount of Rapé is placed in the pipe.
  • One end of the Kuripe is placed in one nostril, while the other end is placed in the mouth.
  • strong exhale through the pipe delivers the medicine deep into the sinuses.

3. Moment of Integration

After application, the recipient remains in silence, allowing the effects of the medicine to fully settle. This moment often brings clarity, grounding, and inner harmony.

4. Closing the Ceremony

The ritual ends with gratitude and prayer, honoring the spirit of the medicine and its guidance.
